Peterborough offers unmatched outdoor recreation opportunities, featuring over 134 lakes within its vicinity, numerous rivers, and major conservation areas and provincial parks at its doorstep. The world-renowned Algonquin National Park is only 2.5 hours away.
The famed 386 km Trent-Severn Waterway runs through the city itself, offering opportunities for boaters, while its lands feature an expansive trail network that forms part of the Trans Canada Trail.
You and your family will enjoy every manner of outdoor activity conceivable, from hiking and canoeing, to powerboating or ATV’ing. In the winter, Peterborough’s trails are superb for cross-country skiing. Downhill skiers enjoy nearby Devil’s Elbow.
Sports & Fitness
Peterborough is a large community that sustains hundreds of clubs and social groups across practically every sport, fitness, and hobby interest. Hockey, lacrosse, and curling are hugely popular among residents, and the city boasts numerous arenas and sports facilities to satisfy demand. Rowing and paddle-sports are popular in the summer. Golfers enjoy numerous golf clubs within the city, and there are several more in nearby areas.
Some notable centres that are open to the public include a brand new YMCA facility, a large wellness centre attached to Fleming College, and Trent University’s fitness facilities that include a state-of-the-art rowing training centre.
The city and YMCA operate a number of programs for children, and in the summer, there are a wide variety of activities, organized team sports (soccer and lacrosse are very popular), summer camps, and cottage options for youngsters to stay active.
