Preceptor Bio

Dr. Derek Haaland is dually certified in Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology and Allergy with a special interest in autoimmune disease.

He is the Medical Director and CEO of The Waterside Clinic in Barrie, Ontario, an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University, Divisions of Clinical Immunology and Allergy and Rheumatology, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

Office Overview

The Waterside Clinic is a Rheumatology, Clinical Immunology, and Allergy Clinic, located in Barrie near the city’s hospital. It is responsible for the care of thousands of patients across a large catchment area which includes Northern and Central Ontario.

Through an innovative care model which incorporates OTN technology, The Waterside Clinic has worked to improve access to underserviced remote communities in Northern Ontario. The clinic utilizes an interdisciplinary team-based approach to care that includes a Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurses, an Occupational Therapist and an administrative support team.

The clinic offers infusion services, and participates in a number of clinical trials and research studies. The facility features 7 examination rooms, modern medical equipment, and uses Accuro for EMR.

Clinic Hours

The clinic is open Monday to Thursday from 8:30am to 5:00pm, and occasionally on Fridays from 9:00am to 4:00pm.

Call/Hospital Responsibilities

On call coverage is provided to the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie and the Orillia Soldier’s Memorial Hospital in Orillia.
